Distortion
We rely on cameras to produce an exact replica of what we think we see, but sometimes they distort the reality. This historic building in Miami, OK is changed through the wide-angle lense of the camera creating the rounded effect you see here. I chose this picture today because of a realization I had yesterday about my own life. That is, what I think I see in my own life is not always an accurate picture of how others see me. Similarly, I fool myself into thinking all is okay when in reality it is not.
Perhaps you are saying, “Can you be more specific, please?” Okay. I had come to believe that I lived by a set of values and was true to those values as much as an individual can be true to any values. These values include things like honesty, openness, health, sensitivity, compassion, and so forth–values many of us would assert for our lives. Then in a conversation with my insightful son I began to see myself through his eyes. His picture was not the same as mine. The values I thought I was living had somehow become skewed, bent a little at the edges–distorted.
I’ve been thinking about those chief values of my life today and wondering how I really fair in each of them. How faithful am I in living out these values I call “important,” and how much do I bend or distort them for my own purposes? It is a question that has given me pause.
