We Are a Field of Beauty
I’ve recently been listening to Francis Collins’ audio book, The Language of God. Collins was the man in charge of the Human Genome Project that mapped out the DNA of human beings. He is also a Christian. In the book he talks about the battle between science and faith. Far from turning him against God, science has helped reveal the majesty and wonder of God. In the book, Collins marvels at the intricacies of biology and chemistry. He discusses the wonders of creation that all point to a Divine Being.
Although the science was often beyond me, I came away from the book with an increased faith and a reverent awe for God’s power. God put into place a magnificently simple and magnificently complex system of creation in which all of life can replicate itself through DNA, yet at the same time each new creation is different from the one before. In this field of flowers, all the blooms look alike for the most part, but each has its own character, its own beauty and its own flaws.

Humankind is the same way. When scientists examine the DNA of people, they find it is remarkably similar, yet we all look different, have different predispositions, talents, and physical abilities. By randomly tweaking just a few DNA during the reproductive process our individualities are created. There are six billion people on this earth, and no one is exactly like me. No one is exactly like you. Everyday, through the wonders of the scientific system, God continues to create.
It also struck me as I listened to the audio that God knows each of these new creations–God knows each new individual flower, bird, and ear of corn. God knows each new human being, and God loves each of these new human creations. None is more important than the next. The Harvard scholar is loved no more or no less than the mentally handicapped. The beauty queen is loved the same as the deformed. The super athlete holds the same value to God as the most clumsy among us. We make judgements about which of God’s creations is better or of more value than the others. We judge smart people or beautiful people as somehow better. I think God looks at each of these unique creations, regardless of their particular attributes and says, “It is good.”
You and I are God’s creations, made uniquely, loved dearly. Individually, we each have our special attributes. Together we become a field of beauty.
